Measures to protect against COVID-19 are desperately needed
The YOU Foundation in Düsseldorf is currently collection contributions to support measures to prevent the spread of the Corona infection in southern Senegal. According to John Hopkins University, the number of individuals infected by Corona in Africa is not yet exceedingly high, but the likelihood of unrecorded cases is large. Many governments have instigated nightly curfews, closures, and limitation on opening hours of markets. The fear of a fast spreading pandemic is enormous and Africa’s health system is not able to manage a large outbreak of Corona. The fear of a new Ebola Virus like situation is circulating.
Not only are medical care, intensive care beds, doctors, nurses and respirators not available, the most basic items are missing: access to clean water, soap and the necessary awareness to understand that safeguards such as social distancing are key to stopping the spread of this invisible virus!
If hand washing is the first line of defense against the spread of the virus then the most important elements are missing in Africa: water and soap!
Many recommended safeguards are not possible due to living conditions: how can someone protect him or herself when a family of ten lives under one roof? Many families eat with their hands out of one bowl, generations live together, and the infection risk is enormous.
The YOU Foundation asks for small on-line donations to support awareness campaigns, the sewing of protective masks by women’s groups, as well as for the distribution of hygiene kits consisting of a water canister, soap, and cleaning materials.
UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Ute-Henriette Ohoven, Founder of the YOU Foundation, says:
“We support women’s groups in Casamance, southern Senegal, in sewing protective masks to contribute to adhering to preventive measures. In addition, this allows the women to earn some money and thereby secure food and clean water for their families.“
