The population of the village of Salamata in Casamance, Senegal, relies primarily on agriculture for its livelihood – yet it is precisely this foundation of their existence that is increasingly threatened by the effects of climate change. These ongoing environmental changes pose existential challenges for the rural population. Despite support from various development cooperation organizations, agricultural production continues to decline. Even under normal circumstances, this production is usually only enough for self-sufficiency for  a few months. Low yields, climate change, inadequate technical equipment, and limited financing options exacerbate food insecurity and rob many families of the prospect of a secure future.

The project to strengthen agricultural resilience among women in Salamata supports 300 women in better coping with the negative impacts of climate change and sustainably securing their vital livelihoods.

The women, who are organized into groups, grow grains and vegetables and process agricultural products on a small scale.

Through climate-adapted seeds, modern processing technology, training, and the strengthening of local savings and credit groups, agricultural yields, income, and food security are improved, and long-term economic prospects are created.

These improved living conditions enable the women to ensure their families’ access to schooling, vocational training, and health care, and to open up a self-determined and more hopeful future for their children.

Project Objectives
