From slum to modern district – training and income support together with the GIZ (Society for International Cooperation)
A unique flagship project: A slum in Dakar, Senegal, which has become home to around 2,000 inner-African refugees – more than half of them children and young people – is being transformed into the modern district of Baraka. Many different projects have been initiated to improve people’s lives: education, training, advancement of women, jobs, income generation and much more.
With special support from GIZ, it has become possible to train the residents of Baraka, who had previously had no training, in skilled trades. Many people benefited from it economically. This sustainable form of support has had a very positive impact, several small businesses have emerged and the whole neighborhood is benefiting from it.
With the support of the Sawiris Foundation for Social Development and CasaOrascom, the YOU Foundation is transforming the slum into a modern and livable district. We support the project with a training program for 28 professions to promote sustainable entrepreneurship in the new district. Find out more in the video :
