Over many years, the children of Tauangzalat (Region Sagaing/Myanmar) have had to take a very long journey on foot every day to reach their school in the city. There still is no permanent school building for the children in the village.
In 2010, the villagers began building a school using bamboo and very simple materials. About 150 children are registered to attend school. Unfortunately, the building is so unstable that during the rainy season no classes can take place because of the leaky roof. A brick structure would be the solution, but the community does not have the financial means to construct such a building. The average income of the villagers is less than 1$ a day.
The children are often ill due to the poor sanitary conditions in the village. The temporary bamboo structures do not offer any protection to the children from the weather and during the rainy season they are often wet. Therefore, there is no assurance that the children will receive a high-quality education which is in truth, their right.
We would like to change this as quickly as possible. With the construction of a new stable school building, 318 children will have the opportunity to receive an education. The brick building in Tauangzalat will have 6 classrooms, an office and 4 bathrooms. Also, the school will need furniture and supplies like tables, benches, and chalkboards. This would guarantee the maximum benefit for the children and ensure a good education for the youth of the village.
