From the planning phase in 2016 to the beginning of construction in 2017 and until today, there have been many changes in the what was previously the slum of Baraka in Dakar, Senegal. Another major milestone has been reached – Moving Day for several families!

It was an emotional day with tears, happiness and laughter because none of the residents initially believed that their lives could ever be so drastically changed. Thanks to the support of many generous sponsors and our very committed team, the pilot project “Baraka from Slum to Modern Neighborhood” is proceeding successfully. The biggest thank you goes to our super sponsor Mr. Samih Sawiris without whom this pilot project never could have been realized!

We were able to witness the project’s progress during our trip to Senegal in February. Approximately 60% of the apartments have been completed and the first families were able to move in. Little by little, all the remaining families will now be able to move into their new future, too.

A large GIZ project “Vocational Training and Employment” has begun and the people are very happy….

In February, we again visited Baraka and accompanied the residents as they moved into their new apartments. During this visit, as always, there were many special moments and we were accompanied in friendly and kind manner by our local friends.
