Food Security - Resilience for Agricultural Households in Times of Climate Change

The project supports the poorest rural communities in the south of Senegal in actively tackling the challenges of climate change. Many households depend on rain-fed agriculture for their livelihoods, which is becoming increasingly precarious. Due to climatic changes, limited resources and a lack of skills and processing techniques, food security is severely threatened. The project’s goal is to strengthen agricultural livelihoods, improve incomes and promote social participation.

Project Objectives:

  • Improving food security and agricultural productivity
  • Strengthening income and economic resilience of households
  • Promoting climate-adapted, sustainable cultivation methods
  • Supporting the processing and marketing of agricultural products
  • Promoting gender equality and the inclusion of disadvantaged groups
  • Strengthening local structures and producer networks

Implementation:

  • Training for producers in climate adaptation, sustainable agriculture, resilience, use of resources and climate information
  • Providing certified, high-quality and climate-adapted seeds with short growth cycles
  • Cooperating with national meteorology services to provide comprehensible weather and climate data
  • Establishing processing facilities and training for post-harvest processing and food preservation
  • Improving access to agricultural inputs (fertilizers, pesticides, animal feed, veterinary medicines, but also machinery, buildings and energy)
  • Supporting the development of marketing and distribution networks
  • Raising awareness of environmental, gender and inclusion issues
  • Participatory involvement of communities, producers and beneficiary groups in all project phases
