School attendance instead of child labor – an innovative and creative educational approach
Disadvantaged children who are forced to work, school dropouts or street children, especially girls, in Bangladesh are offered access to quality education adapted to their circumstances. Children aged 5 to 18 years old from the poorest backgrounds, who live on the street or in slums, are forced to work, are disabled, orphaned, or marginalized, or who can only attend school to a limited extent or not at all, all benefit from night schools.
In these special, inclusive schools, children can be given not only an education but a few precious hours of just being children. With the help of education, they have the chance at a better future and in the long term can break the vicious circle of poverty.
With the night schools, the YOU Foundation and its local strategic partner have established a quality education program for exploited children which also offers pre-school programs.
In order to promote a holistic approach in the night schools, creative activities are also integrated into the program. We also want to give the children the opportunity to develop their interests in a creative and innovative way through art and sports.
Each night school (also created in mobile classrooms) creates opportunities for the children to realize their dreams and their ideas in the form of painting and crafting. The schools also create a space for the children to relax and spend time “being a child,” usually for the first time in their lives. The educational centers also serve as a place where the children can share their ideas and their challenges. This resource strengthens the children’s self-confidence and psyche.
