AFRICA: SENEGAL – A healthy smile for Baraka – thanks to a new, state-of-the-art dental clinic

Another exemplary project is emerging as part of the large-scale BARAKA “From Slum to Modern Neighborhood” project run by the YOU Foundation and its partners: a state-of-the-art dental practice – a place that offers hope and promise.

Following a project evaluation trip in 2016, during which the improvement of dental health was deemed urgently necessary, the YOU Foundation – Education for Children in Need, in consultation with the Senegal Ministry of Health, decided to establish a modern dental clinic with training opportunities for young dentists.

Thanks to our pro bono dentists, Dr. Jochen Bauer and Wulf Kottmann, we were able to build, renovate, fully furnish, equip, and stock the dental clinic with materials, despite major challenges. The result is a state-of-the-art, welcoming practice that will also be used to train dental professionals.

Our heartfelt thanks go to the major donors Henry Schein USA, Mr. Dirk Geuer, Mr. Samih Sawiris, and all the other donors who made it possible to implement this great project!

With this endeavor, we are making a direct contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals, specifically SDG 3 – Good Health and Well-Being. Good dental care means better health and improved quality of life for children, families, and the entire community.

The professional management, training opportunities, and sustainability will now be continued with EDI Senegal.

Our heartfelt thanks go to the pro bono dentists Wulf Kottmann and Dr. Jochen Bauer, who traveled to Senegal several times to provide technical and professional support in setting up the practice and who overcame major challenges that were involved in establishing such a model clinic. Thanks to architect Jens Albrecht, who brought all the plans to fruition.
