Mobile Schools in Crisis Areas
Thanks to the support of Porsche AG, we were able to provide mobile education in tent and container cities in the earthquake region of south-eastern Turkey similar to our first project in this region. In this follow-up project, a state-of-the-art mobile IT learning center was added. All units offered not only quality education, but also much-needed psychosocial support. Children were able to express their feelings and experiences through art, theater, sports, games and creative activities. This was an important step in regaining the sentiments of safety, stability and confidence after the disaster.
The mobile schools (converted container trucks) went to where the families lived: first in tents and later in container settlements. As the schools were slowly rebuilt, the mobile units were increasingly used as IT teaching centers to continue quality teaching. A so-called “Firefly” (mobile school) consisted of two classrooms: an information and technology room with computers and a room for free learning and creative activities, for example in Mathematics, Science and Reading. As a sustainable solution, the learning units will be used in rural and disadvantaged schools going forward.
This “Upgrading” project supplied several additional locations in the earthquake area where the affected children are temporarily housed with mobile schools. The “Firefly” serves as a modern learning unit for high-quality IT and STEM education (Mathematics, Computer Science, Natural Sciences and Technology) and combines skills needed for the future with child-friendly support.
