UNESCO Special Ambassador Dr. h.c. Ute-Henriette Ohoven<\/strong>, who with her YOU Foundation supports sustainable development projects worldwide, including in Senegal, met Prof. Dr. Gert Auffarth from the University of Heidelberg\u2019s renowned eye clinic at a benefit gala in Heidelberg where he donated to a project to help a young girl who was born with albinism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since this meeting, Ute Ohoven and Prof. Dr. Gerd Auffarth, who always has an open ear for questions, are in close contact and he understands the health situation of the of the young girl named Ramata. The YOU Foundation and the personal commitment of Prof. Dr. Auffarth have made it possible for Ramata and her mother to travel to Germany and be treated by Prof. Dr. Auffarth.  In Ramata\u2019s home country, this type of extensive medical care is not an option for her. What is truly remarkable is that this very active seven-year-old, who only has 5-10% of her vision, handles her situation very well and in her everyday life she shines with her intelligence and happy disposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ramata\u2019s \u201cadoptive godparents,\u201d Ute-Henriette Ohoven and Prof. Dr. Gerd Auffarth, are happy and very thankful that Ramata\u2019s future has not been impaired given that being an \u201calbino child\u201d in Africa can be extremely difficult. Albinism in Africa can still often mean constant danger and fear as prejudices and superstitious beliefs may lead to persecution and death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thanks to the personal pro bono engagement of Prof. Dr. Auffarth, as well as the commitment of helpers and donors, Ramata will be able to receive an education and will enjoy a childhood without fear. She is supported and has a loving family and thanks to her eye examination will receive a special set of glasses.  Ramata will be able to participate in yearly screenings at the University of Heidelberg\u2019s eye clinic and will hopefully maintain as much of her vision as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
